Documentary Film (Not Yet Released) |
| Based on true accounts, this film follows several children from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. The film starts on a playground and focuses on one child at a time, following his/her life. At the conclusion of the film, the children we have followed end up in various situations: one joins a gang and gets killed, another ends up in jail (wrong place, wrong time), and the main character, James, uses sports (basketball) to keep focused and out of trouble. In the closing scene of the film, James receives a basketball scholarship that signifies that he has survived the streets and will now be moving on. We hope that young viewers and their parents will not only see themselves in these characters, but will use the film storyline to fast forward their lives and see how outcomes might be changed by changing things in the present. | In this film, we hear directly from incarcerated teens, gang members, parents and teachers, and psychologists describing their experiences and concerns about the safety of youth at school, at home and in the streets. The true stories expressed in this film form the basis for the film Youth Violence: Inside the Skin. |
The Youth Violence Project offers two feature films which can be ordered together or separately. At this time, the dramatic film Youth Violence: Inside the Skin is available. The documentary Voices of Youth Violence will be released in 2009. These films come on DVD and are free. Donations to the Youth Violence Project are greatly appreciated. To order either of these films, email jmack@uab.edu or call June Mack at 205-467-3105.
